Best Nerf Mega Darts (& Aftermarket Deals)

The evolution of Nerf darts is different across all series, but fans of the Nerf N-Strike Mega series may not know just how many evolutions this dart went through or how many variants currently exist today.

In fact, the original version of the Mega Nerf dart is far different than what flies out of modern Nerf blasters. These darts are slightly different than the Ultra Darts.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Mega Nerf dart, what options you have now, and the different types you may encounter, let’s dive into the history of Nerf Mega darts and all of the best variations available on the market.

The History of the Nerf Mega Dart

The Nerf Mega dart that we’ve grown to know and love today is nowhere near the same as it was when the first dart was released. Modeling itself after some of the first Nerf darts, the first Mega Nerf dart released in 1993 was only slightly bigger than the original Nerf dart models, offering a red body with a black suction tip. As you can imagine these darts weren’t the most efficient or as exciting as they are now.

First Mega Nerf dart released in 1993.

The first type, Type 1, had a greater range than other darts, but due to the poor quality of its construction, it simply wasn’t as durable as some of the other dart options. Nerf released a Type 2 dart later on to try to fix this, but this dart actually performed worse than the original version. Type 1 was only used until 1997 and Type 2 was discontinued in 1998.

Somewhere in between, Nerf also decided to release a glow-in-the-dark version for one of their blasters, which offered a regular Nerf Mega dart that was wrapped in a phosphorescent paper. This one also was only used for a short period of time.

Screamin’ Mega Dart

The Nerf dart that we know today started taking shape in 1999. Known as the Screamin’ Mega Dart, this dart was still relatively small but switched the color scheme to yellow and black and included a whistling tip instead of a suction.

This version of the Nerf Mega dart lasted much longer than its predecessors, being utilized in Nerf blasters until it was discontinued back in 2007.

Nerf Mega Centurion Flying Disc

For a period there, there was no innovation. Then, when the Nerf N-Strike Mega Centurion blaster was released in 2013, they decide to change to the modern version that we use today.

Now, Nerf Mega darts are much bigger and feature a red body with a bright orange whistling top. These darts are much more efficient than Nerf Mega darts in the past and serve to improve the range and power that Nerf Mega series blasters have.

Is the Nerf N-Strike Mega Dart the Only Available Option?

Not a fan of having just one type of color scheme for your Nerf Mega blasters? Don’t worry. The common Nerf Mega darts that we see today and used in all Mega pistols have been re-released for several series. Some of the series releases that feature different color schemes include:

  • The Nerf AccuStrike Mega Dart

The Nerf AccuStrike Mega blasters are designed to improve accuracy and provide users with the same powerful blasting experience without having to sacrifice precision. If you already have an AccuStrike series blaster in your possession, you may be familiar with AccuStrike series darts, which utilize a flat, spiral head in order to improve aerodynamics and accuracy.

Unfortunately, this is not a feature that you’re going to find on the Nerf AccuStrikek Mega darts. Instead, Nerf decided to switch things up by using a red dart body and a grey whistling tip.

This doesn’t impact performance, but it does help the color scheme conform to the series. They also have a Deco version of this dart, which includes the AccuStrike logo on the foam body.

  • The Fortnite Mega Dart

Like Overwatch, Fortnite is another popular online multiplayer shooting game that allows players to explore exciting worlds, pick up new weapons, and go head to head against opponents around the world.

The Fortnite line of blasters is just as silly as the in-game offerings, and they designed a new dart color scheme just for the Mega blasters in this line. Instead of the traditional red and orange colors, the Fortnite Mega dart has an orange body with a purple tip.

They also offer a Deco version with a purple lama printed across the foam body and a Legendary version with a yellow body and a yellow tip.

The Nerf Zombie Strike Mega dart was released under the Z.E.D Squad series and featured an all-green body that matched well with the Zombie Strike theme.

They also released a Deco version that included the same all-green color with black measurement marks (designed to look similar to a syringe) along the foam body.

Additional Color Schemes

The problem with limited series releases is that finding refills for your favorite blaster isn’t always easy. Fortunately, there are additional color schemes for the Nerf Mega dart that you can find on the market if you’re looking for a bit of variation in your ammo supply. These include the:

  • The N-Strike Mega Deco Dart, which comes with the same color scheme as the Mega dart with the Mega logo featured on its body.
  • The Sonic ICE Mega Dart, which instead uses a blue body and an orange tip.
  • The BattleCamo Series Nerf Mega Dart, which has a white body with red camouflage markings and a red tip.
NERF Megalodon N-Strike Mega Toy Blaster with 20 Official Mega Whistler Darts

The Nerf Mega series is one that has become known for its red and orange color scheme, which is characteristic of its ammo as well. However, like most Nerf ammunition, you’re not stuck with just this color scheme when it comes time to pick up some new ammo.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover that there’s a lot more to choose from, even if it’s been discontinued or is hidden because it’s a part of a sub-series.
