My Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon Review

On occasion, Nerf will offer up a new line of products that exceed our expectations and give us an entirely new experience. For example, the Nerf N-Strike Mega line of blasters gave us massive new products to play with and the equally exciting introduction of large, whistling ammunition to go along with it.

One of the more well-known blasters in this series is the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon. Having everything you could ask for in a Mega blaster, the Mastodon is a top choice for those who are interested in the line.

Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon Review

Style and Design

Aptly named, the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon blaster is a super-sized weapon that will put most other blasters to shame.

Featuring the striking red and orange colors that Mega series blasters are known for, the Mastodon will attract attention no matter where it goes.What we like is that the mechanical style that we see on most other Nerf weapons did not go to waste on this blaster. 

Unlike many other Nerf products, a lot of care has gone into the design of this product and you can see many of the intricate details far more clearly because of its enhanced size. Speaking to the size of this product, we aren’t kidding when we say that it is a giant blaster. 

Even if an older adult were to carry it into battle, they would still find it a bit awkward to carry like a regular blaster, which only goes to show how much body they provided you with! Overall, the Mastodon looks good.

But how does it perform?

Ammo Capacity

Before we dive into just how many darts this blaster can hold, I think that we should once again return to the ammo change in the Mega series.

Unlike regular darts, Mega darts are much larger and whistle when they fly across this sky. This gives you more potential to hit your opponents and the fun of scaring them when they hear the high-pitched whistle as they travel towards them.

In the case of the Mastodon, your opponent has the displeasure of facing off against 24 of these darts at once. Given the increased size of both your weapon and your darts, you are sure to hit your enemies with at least one, if not all, of the 24 darts provided.

Firing Style and Range

While having a 24-dart capacity is exciting enough, the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon builds upon it by making this blaster motorized as well.

All you have to do to use this blaster is to hold down on the acceleration trigger, which is located just below the firing trigger, wait for your blaster to start rotating, and then hold down the firing trigger to launch your Mega darts!

If you haven’t had enough blaster improvements, we also need to let you know that the Mega series boasts a much longer distance than the traditional blaster.

With the Mastodon, you can expect your darts to reach distances of up to 100 feet! Both of these features are desirable when it comes to conquering in a Nerf battle.

Extra Features

The large size and weight of the Mastodon can make it difficult for some to carry. However, Nerf has already come to the rescue by adding several features to improve the process.

Towards the front, there is a black handle that you can grab onto as you fire at your enemies. If the handle is not enough and you find yourself having issues trying to carry it and use it at the same time, they also provide you with a shoulder strap that will support the weapon for you as you fire.

Considering that some blasters will leave you without the extra help, these small but necessary features are great for those who want to buy the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon.

What We Like

1.  The Large Ammo Capacity - When it comes to Nerf battles, more is always better, especially when you have far more larger darts than your enemy is able to dodge.

With 24 Mega darts in your barrel, you are guaranteed to be able to take down any opponent who gets in your line of fire. For this product, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

2.  The Motorized Blasting Experience - There’s always an element of fear when it comes to weapons that have a rotating barrel. After all, many Nerf blasters that have rotating barrels require you to manually prime your weapon each time that you use it.

In the case of this giant blaster, that would be near impossible to do successfully on the battlefield and would almost certainly result in your quick elimination from the game.

Fortunately enough, Nerf took this into consideration and made the Mega Mega Mastodon a motorized blaster, which allows you to fire your darts with ease. This is what makes it one of the best blasters overall in the Nerf Mega series.

3.  Plenty of Support to Hold Up the Weapon - Bigger weapons means a bigger problem toting your weapon across the battlefield and holding it when firing.

For larger players, this may not be as much of an issue, but many smaller Nerf enthusiasts can find it difficult to carry and use this gun, essentially ruining the experience that this blaster has to offer. 

Thankfully, this gun comes with a handle on the front of the blaster (which is much more desirable than having to support the gun from the bottom) as well as a strap to take some of the weight off as you travel across your battle arena.

No matter big or small, the support features on the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon has you covered.

What We Don’t Like

1.   Long Reload Process - Many Nerf motorized blasters come with clip systems so that you can easily feed more bullets into your weapon without having to worry about manually reloading. Even blasters with drum systems provide this feature.

The bad news about the Mega Mega Mastodon?

This blaster doesn’t come with a loading tool or an easier way to load your weapon, meaning that you will have to reload all 24 darts by hand when you inevitably fire them all.

Considering the amount of time that would be needed to do a full reload, this doesn’t make it the best primary weapon to have on hand if you are engaged in a serious battle. It may work as a back-up weapon, but it is doubtful that you are going to want to do this each time you run out of Mega darts.

2.   Too Many Batteries Add to Weight - The Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon takes 6 D batteries to keep it running optimally. This is one of the larger battery requirements seen on a Nerf blaster and one that can add more weight to the design that it makes it that much more heavier to carry around.

Besides the fact that the D batteries are bulky in their own right, you should also consider the fact that you are most likely going to have to buy batteries regularly if you turn to the Mega Mega Mastodon for help frequently.

If you are not too concerned about the added weight or the number of batteries that go into this piece, you can ignore this point!

3.   Must Be Very Careful When Using Blaster - Along with the many features listed above, the Mega Mega Mastodon also comes with additional pieces such as a drum cover and a drum cage.

When you open up your blaster and put it all together, you must make sure that you are following the directions carefully and making sure that each piece is firmly in place.

The problem that some users have is that they do not put the Mega Mega Mastodon together right, which results in firing issues when they finally begin using the blaster.

As long as you are careful with the blaster when you are putting it together as well as during use, you should have no problems!

Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon Review: Our Verdict

Overall, there is simply nothing else out there that could compare to the Nerf N-Strike Mega Mega Mastodon.

Even among users who may not be as happy with the manual reloading aspects of this blaster, they are excited to have such an awesome motorized weapon that gives them the ability to launch a barrage of Mega whistling bullets across the battlefield, easily taking down their opponents on the way.
